Wakapi is a self-hosted coding time tracker that logs how much time you spend in each project, language, editor, and operating system. It implements the same heartbeat API used by WakaTime's own editor plugins, so tools like VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, and Vim can send data straight to your own instance with no plugin changes needed. Personal dashboards, public leaderboards, and weekly email reports turn that raw activity into a picture of how your coding time is actually spent. People who choose to self-host their coding tracker over a paid cloud service usually point to two things: no recurring subscription cost, since running Wakapi yourself needs only a small server. The other is keeping data that reveals real work patterns and habits on infrastructure they control rather than a third party's. Because Wakapi speaks the same heartbeat protocol as the plugins already installed in most editors, switching an existing setup over is usually a one-line config change rather than a full migration. Every feature, including leaderboards and the REST API, is available self-hosted at no cost, with nothing held back behind a paid tier.
