Penpot is a design and prototyping tool built on open web standards (SVG, CSS, HTML). Teams can create interfaces, design systems, and interactive prototypes together in real time, with design tokens, reusable components, and responsive layout tools. People who choose Penpot most often point to its native SVG file format. Because designs are stored in an open, portable standard rather than a proprietary one, files can move between tools and hand off directly to a codebase, and no single vendor's cloud can hold a team's work hostage. The lack of a subscription is the other recurring reason, since self-hosting drops per-seat licensing entirely. Every feature, including design tokens, dev mode, and the plugin API, is available at no cost with nothing gated behind a paid tier.
