n8n is a workflow automation platform built for technical teams: a visual, node-based canvas for building automations and AI agents, with more than 1,500 pre-built integrations covering APIs, databases, and communication tools. Unlike drag-and-drop-only automation tools, n8n lets you drop into JavaScript or Python inside a workflow whenever the visual nodes aren't enough. People who move to n8n most often cite two things. One is self-hosting it instead of paying for task-based cloud automation pricing. The other is writing real code inside a workflow instead of hitting the ceiling of a purely visual builder. That combination, a canvas with a genuine code escape hatch, is a recurring theme in how technical teams describe choosing n8n over simpler automation tools. n8n's Business tier gates SAML and LDAP login, role-based access control, separate dev/staging/production environments, and Git-based version control; the Enterprise tier additionally gates external secret store integration. Everything else on a self-hosted instance, including workflow automation and AI agent building, is free.
