Kimai is a time-tracking platform for freelancers, teams, and agencies that bill by the hour. It handles project and task management, generates PDF invoices directly from tracked time, and reports timesheets with a calendar view. It also supports SAML and LDAP authentication for teams that already run their own directory. People who move their time tracking to Kimai point to two recurring reasons: cost that stays flat as a team grows instead of climbing with every seat added. They also value keeping billing and client data on infrastructure they run themselves, which matters for teams with data-residency or compliance requirements. The one feature sold separately is expense tracking, available as the paid Expense Management plugin; everything else, including invoicing, budgeting, timesheets, and the REST API, is free with self-hosting.
