About this app

Element is a messaging and collaboration client for the Matrix network, built around end-to-end encrypted chat by default, rooms, threads and direct messages, one-to-one voice and video calls, and full-text search across your conversations. It connects to any Matrix homeserver, so you choose or run the infrastructure it talks to, rather than being tied to one provider. People who choose Element often point to Matrix's bridging model: a single account can reach other chat networks through bridges, so Element ends up working as one client for conversations that would otherwise be spread across several separate apps, a theme that recurs in self-hosting discussions. Encryption is on by default too, rather than an opt-in mode you have to remember to switch on. LDAP sign-in, role-based access control, audit logging and the autoscaling, multi-tenant Synapse Pro backend are part of the paid Element Server Suite Pro tier. Chat, calls and search are free to self-host without it.
